Which version is right for you?
A practical guide based on the most common professional buying scenarios.
You want to own it permanently
Best for professionals who plan to use Dragon long-term and want to avoid ongoing subscription fees. Pay once, use it for years. Over 3 years, costs significantly less than the annual subscription.
- Lawyers, accountants, medical professionals
- Anyone with a stable Windows 10/11 setup
- Users who prefer owning software outright
You already have Dragon v15
If you own Dragon Professional Individual or Group version 15, the upgrade is the most cost-effective path to v16. Full Windows 11 compatibility and updated Microsoft 365 support at roughly half the perpetual price. Existing voice profiles carry over.
- Existing Dragon v15 users only
- Requires v15 licence key at installation
You need it on multiple PCs
The only single-user option with unlimited PC installs. One licence, one voice profile - but install it on as many Windows PCs as you need. Useful if you move regularly between a desktop and a laptop. Includes local VRA support.
- Users with multiple Windows PCs
- Those who prefer annual billing
- Note: more expensive than perpetual over 2+ years
You are a student or educator
The full Dragon Professional 16 product at a discounted price. No feature restrictions. Widely used by students with dyslexia, RSI, or other accessibility needs. Perpetual licence - pay once, own it permanently.
- University and TAFE students
- Teachers and academic staff
- Accessibility and assistive technology needs
You are deploying for a team
Dragon Professional Group adds IT management tools not available in retail versions - web management console, Active Directory/SSO, volume licensing, usage reporting, and Citrix/RDP support. The right choice for organisations deploying to 5 or more users.
- Government agencies and departments
- Legal chambers and large practices
- Healthcare organisations
- Any IT-managed Windows environment
Dragon Professional Anywhere or SRC
Dragon Professional 16 is English-only and locally installed. If you need cloud-hosted, virtual desktop, or Citrix deployment, Dragon Professional Anywhere may be more suitable. If you need 57+ languages or a simpler cloud subscription, look at Speech Recognition Cloud.
Dragon vs Windows built-in voice tools
Windows 11 includes Voice Typing (Win+H) and Voice Access - both require an internet connection per Microsoft's own documentation. Dragon Professional 16, once installed and activated, operates without an internet connection. For professionals working with sensitive documents, in environments with limited connectivity, or requiring consistent accuracy with specialised vocabulary, this distinction is significant.
Dragon Professional 16 vs Speech Recognition Cloud
Dragon and Speech Recognition Cloud serve different needs. Dragon is a locally installed, offline-capable, English-only product built for deep workflow integration - custom vocabulary, voice macros, audio file transcription, and hands-free PC control. Speech Recognition Cloud is a cloud-based subscription that works instantly with no voice training, supports 57+ languages, and runs in any Windows application. The right choice depends on your connectivity requirements, language needs, and whether you want a locally installed or cloud-based solution.
What Dragon Professional 16 does not do
Dragon Professional 16 is designed for single-speaker dictation and transcription. It will not reliably transcribe multi-speaker conversations, meetings, or interviews. It is a Windows-only product - Nuance discontinued Dragon for Mac. It supports English only across six regional variants (Australian, New Zealand, UK, US, Canadian, and Indian English). For cloud-hosted or virtual desktop deployments, consider Dragon Professional Anywhere.
System requirements
Dragon Professional 16 requires Windows 10 or Windows 11. Allow at least 12GB free disk space for installation. An internet connection is required for the initial download and activation, but not for ongoing use. Apple AirPods are not supported for live dictation - a dedicated USB headset or dictation microphone is recommended for best accuracy.
